REAL Food Is Saving My Health

Not only does REAL Food save me a lot of money, but it is also saving my health.  Recently our governor of the great state of Idaho addressed the unhealthy affects ultra processed foods have on our bodies, especially with respect to children, to the point that he signed into law that some of those things (sodas and candy) are no longer allowed to be purchased by those using government assistance to buy food.  He further went on to state that studies show the excessive consumption of ultra processed foods cause significant health issues like heart disease and diabetes, among many others.  I am hopeful his concerns will also address the poor quality of our school lunches and what is being offered to students on a daily basis.

Ultra processed foods don’t contain a whole lot of food but rather lab created chemical ingredients that disrupt our body’s normal way of operation.  We were never designed to eat those foreign substances.  The amount of sugar and sodium in a lot of ultra processed items far exceeds what anyone should consume on any given day.  In a nutshell, ultra processed anything is simply not welcome in my home or in my body.

After all of the holiday celebrations and eating a lot of things I knew I shouldn’t be my poor body was in need of a reset.  At that time I was feeling so bloated and inflamed.  I felt miserable in my own skin and it was awful.  At the end of February I went back to strict Keto for six weeks and it has been amazing.  The inflammation went away, I dropped eight pounds of excess water weight and my auto immune issues settled right down.  I also started to sleep better and my menopausal hot flashes became far less frequent as my hormones also settled down.  I felt so much better, both physically and emotionally.

Now, as I allow myself greater varieties of healthy foods (all REAL), and a small piece of good quality chocolate if I feel like it, I find I am easily able to tolerate them with no adverse effects.  I am choosing quality over quantity and really reading those labels on anything I buy in a carton or package.  With better sleep and a calmer immune system I have more energy, clarity and an overall sense of wellbeing.  I feel really good.  REAL Food is definitely saving my health.

  1. The chemicals that are allowed in the food here in the US is so infuriating to me. I'm glad to hear some government officials are taking measures to stop it.

    1. We need to support our local farmers and ranchers, not the larger corporations that produce all that crap.

  2. This is a great testimonial for reading labels. I quit buying a lot of things that I was buying on auto-pilot. This week, I am going back to drinking black coffee. I am just consuming too much coffee creamer and cannot have cream in my coffee. I was never a fan of granola bars, boxed cookies, or crackers so giving that up was pretty easy.

  4. My theory is that if folks had to make the snacks & treats they over eat they'd eat a whole lot less.

Mom made a dessert for Sunday dinner & that was it- when it was gone during the week that was it. *Sometimes* she'd make cookies during the week. Nowadays you can buy a dessert for Sunday dinner, consume it all on Sunday knowing the other 6 days you can go back to the store or coffee shop and get another dessert.

Looking down the aisles at the store makes me wonder do we really need that many different chips, crackers, cereals?

Even when I was growing up people snacked on chips, crackers & cola. But I'd guess the ingredients back then were less mysterious than now. And people knew that wasn't sufficient for good, healthy eating.

Poor quality food doesn't just come to us as "snack food" any more; it comes looking like real food in the form of a microwave entree or boxed meal just add water, as fruit chews or granola bar.

There's a huge store near me that advertises they have over 100,000 DIFFERENT items in their store. Which is exactly why I prefer Aldi. I create variety with basic ingredients. If you look for variety in your food purchases that usually comes with a long, unpronounceable list of ingredients.

  5. I am so glad that your state is banning soda and other junk food for Snap benefits. I love the sweet stuff , but do not buy it often. You are such a great example of eating so well.
