My grandmother’s fruitcakes were legendary. She always made them the day after Thanksgiving so they would have plenty of time to soak up enough rum and be at their best in time for Christmas. I remember always looking forward to her Christmas package arriving because you could smell the fruitcake before you even opened the box! My mother would brew a fresh pot of coffee and we would unwrap that fruitcake right away and enjoy a slice along with that cup of coffee. Good memories!
I am intrigued by the grape/cherry jelly! How much do you use? This fruitcake sounds DELICIOUS even without the rum (which I am admittedly not fond of).
ReplyDeleteThe jelly is an 8 ounce jar.
DeleteI've always wanted to make a fruitcake. Mom used to make a big one but now my brother makes smaller ones for everyone. I'll be saving this recipe because it sounds so good! Ours never had rum and I'd like to try it.
ReplyDeleteThe rum is good. I am going to make it this year.
DeleteBoth of my grandmothers made fruitcake for the holidays. As a child and teen, I didn’t like them. Now, looking back as a 60 yr old, how I wish I could have a slice of those fruitcakes!
ReplyDeleteMe too! I appreciate it more now than I did as a teen as well.
