My 2025 Gardening Season Has Begun - Sort Of…

I don’t want to plant a vegetable garden this year.  I’m just not feeling it, with so much that has been going on lately (more on that later because right now I might just come across like a raving lunatic), so I decided not to.  I also think it is because of having to have the dying maple tree removed and the giant gap it has left in my landscaping.  I miss my gorgeous tree so much so instead I want to simply work on taking care of the mess that was left behind after the removal and make things pretty again.

Lots of good choices

Someday I would love to add a hydrangea to my yard

As per usual I filled my flower pots over Mother’s Day weekend.  That is my launching point for gardening season.  I added a new flower pot this year.  After replacing my enamel water bath canner last year I am repurposing the old one for the backyard.  I drilled a few holes in the bottom for drainage, filled it with potting soil and planted flowers.  I think it turned out quite cute and fits the theme in the backyard nicely.

Off to a good start!

When I got home I used my drill to add drain holes to this old canner

What to do with the vacant space where the maple tree used to live is something I’ve mulled over quite a bit over the winter.  I think I’ve decided to plant fruit trees there.  In doing so I’m creating myself a mini orchard with the apple tree, a new peach tree, a new plum tree and the pear planted in a row along the fence.  I’m excited for the future produce these trees will be blessing me with.

I sure miss my tree, but this area is going to get a total revamp

Making progress!

Once the trees are planted I’m also going to bring the curved garden beds out further and increase those spaces.  I want to add more perennials to the garden beds as well.  In the fall I may add more bulbs too.  I’m in no rush to get it all done this year.  I plan to work on it little bit by little bit.  By fall it will look a little differently around here, but it will be simple, nothing too fancy or overlyspectacular.

The coop is looking snazzy!  I love the canner there 😊
I think the girls approve!

Do you have any big garden plans this year?  Are you landscaping or planting a garden?  Have you had to remove trees or shrubs and what did you do afterward?  Please share any summer yard or garden projects you have coming up and we can all inspire each other.

  1. I didn't garden at all last year due to my husbands heart surgery last May. I knew there was no way I'd be able to keep up with it so only grew a few herbs. Some years are like that. This year I have two new raised garden beds and lots of pots already filled with spring/summer veggies and herbs. I also got a new dog wood tree. Next summer we will probably have to get our old red bud that is in the middle of our backyard taken down and I will be SO sad to see it go. It's probably 35 years old and we've trimmed and fertilized all we can. It did still bloom some and a little more than half of it still has leaves but it is time. (My husband is the reason it is still here this year)

  2. I have all perennials in my front yard under my windows. The area was redone about 20 years ago and my mom added is some new things this year with color. My backyard is all fenced in and it is just for my dog. The grass is lush and green and she has so much fun out there. I quit doing annuals as they die in our summer heat.

    1. I like perennials myself, but I typically do the annuals in my flower pots.

  3. I gave up my plot in a community garden last summer after 10 years. I went out one afternoon to start on it. I stood there looking at it and realized I don't want to do this any more. I thought maybe as the summer went on I'd miss it. I didn't. For various reasons that wasn't me any more.

So now I'm focusing on adding plants around the yard.

It's rather freeing to change things up.

  4. I'm definitely not a gardener and my plan has been to do the minimum with my yard. Its not even a large piece of land, but I realized that my heart wasn't into killing myself in this heat. My fig tree roared back to life as it usually does, but I know the critters will get all of the figs and that's OK.

    2. The deal with my daughter has always been she tills, prepares, and plants. I maintain and harvest. We've had 2 mid-sized in ground gardens. This year she is not able to do this for medical reasons, so I bought 20 five-gallon food grade buckets on a great deal and we extended our container garden. We added this to what I already had -5 raised beds and 2 wash tubs. We drilled holes added bricks in the bottom, filled with dirt and planted with what we wanted. Hopefully, this will yield some good food! But it is more about spending time together. :-)
