As I had mentioned in a previous post this is the time of year to update or install raised garden beds if you are of a mind to do that. I have been toying with adding one more raised bed to my backyard for extra planting space next spring. At the end of October I used the remainder of my birthday money to purchase a three foot square corrugated metal garden bed off of Amazon for $27. Last week a friend and I put it together and I hauled it outside. It was super easy to put together, took us less than ten minutes, and since they aren’t overly heavy it was easy to carry it out and set it up in the backyard.
Filled with cardboard, bunny & chicken litter, paper bags, sticks & twigs
Once I had it placed where I wanted it in the garden area of my backyard I laid a layer of cardboard I had (as well as the box the garden bed had come in) into the bottom of the bed to attract earthworms. Earthworms love cardboard. I then added a couple bins of bunny litter along with everything I had cleaned out of the chicken coop when I got it winter ready for the hens.
Next it was time to add a few branches and twigs lying around in the backyard before filling it up with soil. I ended up at Home Depot one evening after work picking up twelve bags of garden soil to add, not only to the new bed, but to also top up a couple of the other ones I’d installed the previous year. I dumped in the soil and raked it smooth.
Next spring I plan to acquire some wood chips to put around the raised beds to finish off the garden area. It will not only look nice but will also help to control weeds and make it so I don’t have to walk in mud after watering or when it rains. For now, I am officially calling gardening season 2024 complete!
Looking good! The mulch on the ground will be very helpful.
