I began
this month by taking advantage of sales in the flyers, but to be honest I wasn’t
all that impressed. Right now sales prices
look a lot like the regular prices from only a few months ago. Nonetheless, I was able to restock my dairy
items at fairly reasonable prices with sales and digital coupons I had
downloaded.

My next
shop was at Winco to pick up some fresh produce, again very high compared to a
short time ago, and a few pantry items including restocking my teas. One of the things I was craving for some
reason was cheerios with sliced bananas on top, a staple growing up, so I splurged
and bought some. I like the honey nut,
but find them too sweet so I purchased a box of plain ones too and when I got
home I mixed them 50/50. I also picked
up a box of raisin bran. By sticking to
store brands which surprisingly had a clean ingredients list, by comparison I
spent a whole lot less and they are really good. I was very selective with my produce and
ended up scaling back the amount I originally planned to by, but it was enough
so I won’t complain.
My last shop was to pick up two boxes of Triscuits on sale for $1.99 each and a few more bananas. I wanted the crackers to take with me on my summer excursions. I enjoy these with cheese slices or cream cheese spread on them while I am out camping or hiking for a quick snack or as part of a light lunch.
My only nonfood item was to pick up a extra jug of laundry detergent to add to my current supply for a mere $2.99. I thought that wasn’t too bad. My total spent on food came in at $64.61 for the month and although I don’t appreciate the rise in prices I do feel I did alright pricewise with what I got.
With prices set to rise even higher I am going to have to get creative and figure out new ways to curb expenses I suppose, but as always, I am up for a good challenge. How are you doing with your grocery purchases? Are you still able to find good deals and sales?
I start every Wednesday by scanning the online flyers and loading coupons to my loyalty card. Like you, I find the sales to be rather lackluster. I find my best deals by looking at the closeout or manager’s specials. Unfortunately, you have to be in the store to see those. Back when we had to drive kids to school in the morning for morning practices, (25 miles round trip) I would often swing by the store to save a trip. Noe, however, I don’t go to the stores that much anymore. I drive to town on Friday, to avail myself of the quadruple fuel points on my loyalty card, and also fill my car. I suppose by less trips I am saving more. Honestly, I never used to mind grocery shopping. In fact, I loved it. But now? It makes me feel sad at the state of affairs.

I scan the ads and check the deals each week too and they are abysmal. Fortunately I can still get what I need at a decent price right now. All subject to change, I'm sure.
DeleteEarl Grey tea is my favourite. I love ❤️ tea. Yes, special prices today don't seem good at all. The cost of living has skyrocketed everywhere, including here in Montreal, Canada.
ReplyDeleteLooks like you are trying your best, this is all we can do. I have been doing this as well, cutting back on things I don't need and purchasing items I do need on sale as much as possible.
Thank you so much for sharing, and warm greetings from a retired lady.
Thank you Linda. I'm so grateful to have you following along. :)
DeleteI agree about the sales. I have found that while Costco can cost me more up front, the quality is very good and my groceries last longer because I'm getting more. I do buy mostly frozen veggies at my regular grocery store and some basics. Costco frozen blueberries c and cherries are very good and we have them for dessert. Very good deals on coffee and almond butter too - Katie
ReplyDeleteLike you I find my Costco purchases do save me $$ in the long run. I like their frozen berries too.
